SS 396: More than just a straight-line machine.

Personally, wo don’t like the idea of a car that goes like a bird when the road's like a ruler, and then turns chicken every time it has to change direction. What’s more, we don’t think you do either. Be assured, we gave every SS 396 an engine - a 325-hp 396-cu.-in. Turbo-Jet V8, with 360- and 375-hp versions on order. That wasn’t all. We gave it a suspension, too.

Stiffer coil springs and shocks at all four corners came first. Next, a stiffer anti-sway bar at the front and special frame reinforcements at the back. Then a set of 7.75 x 14 red stripe tires and a fully synchronized 3-speed transmission with floor-mounted shift.

By the time we woro finished, we knew we had your kind of machine; a machine that you could use to demonstrate the techniques of safe precision driving to others. The final touch was to paint the grillework black and add two businesslike scoops to the hood. Alter all, this was a machine with a purpose. What we did was give it a purposeful look.
